The Spirit Vaults was located right at the bottom of South Street at No. 49 in
1923 (K). By 1947 the pub had become the Wine and Spirit Vaults (B).
It was still around in 1960 (K), but had been demolished by 1970 (K), No. 49 no longer existing and was
probably demolished during the building of Western Way and the road junction at the bottom of South Street.
A listing in Whites directory of 1878 shows a John Yelland to be resident at 49 South Street with the
occupation of Victualer.
It is therefore very likely that the Spirit Vaults began as some sort of beerhouse in a private residence prior
to 1878. It is not listed in the earlier directories.
